If you picture touring Australia and the outback as vast stretches of flat land and red dirt, you may be missing the best of this extraordinary destination. The outback is as diverse as the endless sea – internationally renowned for its natural wonders and the world’s oldest living culture. Come to relax and fill your itinerary with remarkable touring experiences that will stay with you forever.
When planning your next outback trip, consider Australia’s longest transcontinental crossing – Byron Bay to Steep Point. The 28-day transcontinental tour takes you from “the most easterly point of Australia” to “as far west as a 4×4 Guided Tour vehicle can get.” This trip has been carefully planned to take in some of Australia’s most beautiful inland sceneries and popular tourist attractions.
The departure
The departure point would be Byron Bay N.S.W, where you will stay for a night or two before visiting the most easterly point on the Australian mainland. The real fun begins from this point when you start heading westwards. Leaving the Pacific Ocean behind, the transcontinental tour takes you up through central Queensland, where you will get a chance to visit historical cities and towns like Cunnamulla and Charleville.
As your 4×4 Guided Tour, we have some very special and exclusive places to visit and would love to showcase contrasting landscapes along the way. Discover desert oases, rock holes, flooding creeks and rivers described by Banjo Patterson in his poetry.
The highlights
Although we won’t be getting in the way of any flood, we will certainly cross the Simpson Desert from the east to the west. This will allow you to experience the famous Birdsville Hotel and have some fun on Big Red before continuing west to head towards Dalhousie Springs. Swim in the warm water of the refreshing Dalhousie springs and then refill the fuel at Mt Dare to continue heading towards Chambers Pillar and Alice Springs. You will have some spare time to explore the places you want to mark “done” from your bucket list in the East MacDonnell ranges.
From Alice Springs, our 4×4 Guided Tour will continue on our outback way and visit Palm Valley before heading back down to Kulgera for fuel. This is where the Gun Barrel journey begins, as we follow in Len Beadell’s footsteps westwards and explore the Surveyors General Corner Post, the Great Central Road and outback communities along the way.
After fuelling at Warburton, the most isolated part of the Gun Barrel, we will take you on a leisurely drive through the Gibson Desert to Carnegie Station. Along the way, you will have the honour to discover some stunning country, visit Len Beadell’s monument at Mt Beadell and see the mesmerising sunsets of Wiluna.
Wiluna has a lot to explore, from its Canning Stock route to the history of the gold rush periods. The local museum is also worth a visit, where you will get to visit the North Pool. The pool is a major tourist point for any Canning stock route adventure and a rejuvenating place to have a soothing dip. From there on, we will continue our red dirt adventure across to the Coast of Western Australia.
After refuelling at the roadhouse, our desert tour will enter the park. This is where you can experience some white soft sand dune along with some beach driving, a real change from the red sand dunes of the Simpson Desert. Our final destination point is so close now. As we head towards the point itself it is time to pinch yourself, you have done it! An East West 4×4 tour right across this vast desert continent, Simpson Desert, Gibson Desert ticked off the List. We will spend two days on white sand, at night we are camped close to the beach so we can listen to the waves tumble in on the beach giving all a chance to relax and enjoy.
Our Simpson Desert Tour will conclude back on the blacktop at the edge of the park. It’s time to say goodbye, but we would like you to visit Monkey Mia, Kalbarri or many other places of interest while continuing your adventure in the West. Mission accomplished!
